In the struggle for civil rightsthere is no greater or higher name than that of Martin Luther King Jr. But when students study his speeches and death, his enduring legacy and the arguments that surround him and still shape our diverse culture today, they think of Atlanta Georgiawhere he was born and worked, or Washington DCwhere he delivered his most famous speeches, or Memphis Tennesseewhere his life was tragically cut short by the assassins’ bullet.

But Hawaiiplays a part in King’s legacy as well, and perhaps a surprising one.

Shortly after the formation of the Hawaii State Legislatureon September 17, 1959 King flew to the islandsand delivered a speech that remains famous to this day. The thrust of his oratory was race relations in the nation as he praised the islands for the harmony and peace between ethnicities that could be found there. King toured the islands widely, speaking at the forum committee of the Student Senate of the University of Hawaiiand preaching powerfully at Hawaii’s Central Union United Church of Christ.

King saw Hawaiias a haven of racial peace and prosperity, a tropical model to be embraced in the sweaty, angry streets of the deep south where local governments were oppressive and those who spoke out did so frequently at the cost of their lives. His impression of the islands was so powerful that in 1965 as King led the march from Selmato Montgomeryhe and those who went with him did so draped in Leis, broadcasting their peace and their commitment to the tranquility of the islandsin their intentions.

Hawaiiremembers them and still honors King to this day. Thousands in the islands have off from work in honor of King’s life and mission and each year a parade travels from Ala MoanaBeach park to Kapiolanipark to remember the great equalizer and his passion for the Peaceof Hawaii.
